I am at  my picture window fascinated by the spectacular view.  I can sit and look out my window for hours.  Today there is fresh snow on the old ice.  A pair of black and white goldeneyes have come to visit in the 100 meter stretch of open water.  The Canadian flag flutters softly.  I sit quiet.  It is good medicine.

I was tucked in bed the other night reading when around ten thirty I was disturbed by wolves howling from across the lake.  For half an hour I heard them approaching camp with very loud and very bizarre vocalizations. I have never had this experience before.  I got up and crept out on my deck. It was an extremely dark and starless night and it took about ten minutes before my night eyes could distinguish faint shadows.  As temperatures are above freezing,  I could hear them moving on the soft ice.  They then started a howling session that was unbelievable.  The cruel, cold voices of a hungry wolf pack made me shiver.  The hair on the back of my neck stood straighter then it ever had before.  Scared?  You bet!  I was sure one was going to leap right up on the deck.  After five minutes I let out the loudest yell ever and then again.  Slowly they moved off into the night.  I think they were smelling my dog and looking for a snack.  It was the best wild life experience this year.  Spring is here the earliest it’s ever been.  We are thinking it is a temporary March glitch and April will be back to ordinary.  Time will tell.

Clear and cold here in the northwoods  and interesting. On December 31, 2011 while sitting looking out the window with visiting friends Ken and Judy, we watched 11 Wolves appear along the shore line of the narrows and walk away down Wabaskang.   Tom wonders about the connection between the year ending, the number of wolves and the fact that they were walking away.  Metaphoric anyway.

Didn’t even need the ol’ bottle of bug dope this summer, fishing was fantastic and you couldn’t beat the weather here…. beautiful, just beautiful.  Book your Ontario fishing trip soon for next year.

Gary, Vicky and Jake,  more happy fishing people.  We enjoyed their visit and they enjoyed the lake.  What a beautiful first week of September we had.

Camp’s been full for most of the season, and fishing has been great.  We have a few openings for August & September.  Check us out,  the weather is beautiful here and you need a break.

Our opening week started off a little cool, weather wise.  In fact there was snow in the air 3 days ago but it didn’t stick to the ground.  The wind has been steady from the North East for 14 days making water temperatures  perfect for  spring Lake Trout fishing.  Jo Ann Schulenberger caught and released a 29″ Lake Trout. Kudos to her for releasing such a beautiful trophy back to the lake.  Some great Smallies were  caught and released during this opening week too.  Rock and  Noel Petit  also had a good week of fishing on Wabaskang Lake.  Noel caught this nice 24″ long Lake Trout.  We had a great conversation with them on the latest, greatest recipe one might use to enjoy this fish.  So maybe we will post some soon!
